What is Kijabe Dark Tunnel Hike?

The Kijabe Dark Tunnel Hike is a trek that delves into the history and explores the natural beauty of Kijabe, The Great Rift Valley, and Kenya’s scenic landscapes. These tunnels, now dark and mysterious, add an intriguing element to the adventure. Beyond its historical significance, the Kijabe Dark Tunnel Hike allows enthusiasts to test their hiking skills and explore hidden natural wonders within the tunnel passages.

How to Get to Kijabe Dark Tunnels

Kijabe is accessible by road from Nairobi, approximately a 1.5-hour drive. Upon reaching Kijabe town, our local guides can direct you to the hike’s starting point. However, carry a map or GPS device while on a solo expedition to aid navigation and ensure you stay on track throughout the hike. While the tunnels are straightforward, following marked paths and signage is essential to avoid getting lost in the surrounding terrain.

Preparing for Your Adventure

With proper preparation, hikers can enjoy a memorable journey through Kenya’s past and present as they embark on the Kijabe dark tunnel hike. Wear hiking boots and comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor activities. Due to the absence of natural light, hikers are advised to carry a headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries. A reliable light source helps hikers navigate the tunnels safely. Remember to bring a first aid kit, sufficient water, and snacks to last the whole hike. Booking a local guide in advance makes the experience less stressful, and you can do that here.

Navigating Through the Tunnels

As the name suggests, Kijabe tunnels are dark. Walking through the Kijabe tunnels is an otherworldly experience as the darkness adds an element of mystery and excitement to the hike. A source of light is needed to help you navigate safely inside the dark cave. Be prepared for uneven terrain and occasional debris inside the tunnels. Watch your step and proceed cautiously, especially in areas where the ground may be slippery. To increase your odds of completing the terrain, visit the area during the dry season. This starts from June to October, when there is less chance of rain, ensuring better trail conditions.

Exploring the Surrounding Landscape

Kijabe offers breathtaking views of the Rift Valley escarpment and lush greenery outside the tunnels. Take a moment to appreciate Mt Margaret, Mt Longonot, and William Hill from afar. If you are bold enough, you can enjoy a hot shower from the hot springs around. Additionally, watching a reluctant stream with an unknown source is mesmerizing, if not confusing.

Look for native wildlife, such as birds and small mammals, surrounding Kijabe. However, observe wildlife from a distance and refrain from feeding or disturbing them in their natural habitat. Finally, respect the environment by packing out all trash.

Tree Planting

As part of the Kereita Wilderness Ventures conservation region, you can help us plant a tree or several at the end of the hike. The trees are purchased from KENVO or KFS, and our guides will show you how to do it. For corporates, contact KWA and one of our representatives will contact you.
